Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and based on the extraordinary story of Bella Baxter, who is brought back to life by a scientist, “The Poor Things” tells the story of Bella Baxter, played by Emma Stone, who is considered to be at the peak of her career. Set in the late 19th century, this work of dark humor, drama, and romance focuses on the life of a dead woman who is brought back to life with the brain of a child by Dr. Godwin ‘God’ Baxter, a wounded and outcast scientist played by Willem Dafoe.
Exposed to the prejudices of society and living a life among fantastic creatures, Bella finds herself on an adventure with her curiosity for the outside world. During this adventure, she crosses paths with McCandless, a caring and understanding lab assistant played by Ramy Youssef, and Duncan, an outspoken lawyer with a distinctive British accent played by Mark Ruffalo. On their adventures to Lisbon, Bella finds herself immersed in a series of experiences and, in the process, gains a deeper understanding of knowledge, philosophy, and everything around her. Throughout the film, the viewer witnesses Bella’s development and, at the same time, has the opportunity to reflect on themes such as identity, knowledge, and the search for meaning.
‘The Poor Things’ won the prestigious Golden Globe Award at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. It also left the BAFTA Awards with five awards. On March 10, 2024, it won the Oscar in the categories of Best Actress, Best Make-up and Hair Design, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
